Former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has repeatedly displayed his mettle as one of the very few Nigerian politicians who understand the political and economic terrains with steep insight.
Since President Buhari assumed office, his administration has been characterised by unforgivable faux pas. From publicly exerting authority over the Central Bank to calling Nigerians criminals in a foreign country, the Buhari government has been quite a spectacle. On the economic front, Nigerians have been left miserable, with the exchange rate of Naira to Dollar steadily increasing everyday with disastrous consequences.
Some have reasoned that the aforementioned concerns are happening because of the President’s failure to draw Tinubu closer, draw from the advice of his legion of eggheads and allow the former Lagos governor take an active role in government as he did in Buhari’s campaign. The outcome of the National Assembly leadership tussle has also left the political juggernaut scorned. The optics couldn’t have been more cloudy right now for the nation.
Tinubu is believed to have now left Buhari for climes where his contributions could be better appreciated. In Guinea, Conakry last October, Tinubu’s political contribution helped in no small measure to re-elect President Alpha Conde. He is now in Niger to participate in the election there.
The last general elections may have been won by a northerner who has popular backing from that part of the country, but the contributions of Asiwaju Tinubu cannot be over-emphasised. Buhari was said to be unsellable to the Southern voters but for Tinubu’s benevolence.
As someone who has surrounded himself with eggheads over the past 10 years, Tinubu would easily have assembled those brains that already have what it takes to run a government without much theatre. When Nigerians elected Buhari, they did so because of the new individuals he associated himself with, and they couldn’t have anticipated this one-man show some have accused the president of running. Even if he doesn’t have the intention to contest for a second term, Buhari should reconsider his stance and draw close all those who could help him..
