By Kolawole Olayinka, Abeokuta

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has disclosed that the environment plays an invaluable role in the growth and enhancement of the nation’s socio-economic activities.

Governor Amosun made this known in Abeokuta on Wednesday while declaring open the 11th National Council on Environment with the theme “Unlocking the Investment Opportunities in the Environment Sector Towards Nigeria’s Economic Recovery, Diversification, Growth and Sustainable Development.’’

The Governor who noted that the environment provides raw materials for production of goods and services, said it was laden with resources that were vital for achieving economic growth and development, not only for the present, but for future generations.

Amosun noted that Climate change which often resulted from persistent damage to the ozone layer, posed great danger to the lives of people living within the water basins, calling for concerted efforts towards ensuring the protection and sustenance of the environment.

“Our belief is that Ogun State; as the industrial and education capital of Nigeria, must not take the issue of environment with levity, if truly we want to maintain the momentum,” the Governor said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Environment, Mallam Ibrahim Jibril has said the Federal Government was committed to finding alternative sources of revenue to boost the recovery process of the nation’s economy.

Mallam Jibril stated this during the 11th National Council on Environment (NCE) Meeting held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, stressing that Nigeria needed to focus more on agriculture and technology in order to fully survive economic recession.

He explained that the Council meeting was designed to ensure coordination of sustainable environmental management across the nation, noting that the safety of mankind depended on the environment, urging delegates at the meeting to be objective and unbiased in their deliberations, saying the resolutions of the meeting was critical to reducing environmental risk the nation had been exposed to.

In her goodwill message, the Wife of the Governor of Ogun State and President of UPLIFT Development Foundation, Dr. (Mrs.) Olufunso Amosun, charged stakeholders to take the issue of the environment more seriously, advising environmentalists to inculcate in the younger generation knowledge on how to safeguard the environment.
