He was recently kidnapped from his farm at Ilu-Odo near Akure by some Fulani herdsmen before security agents rescued him. The real persons who kidnapped him are still unknown. The trial of some persons by the Ondo State Police Command as behind the abduction is neither here nor there. But reports during the week that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Olu Falae, was shot at by a policeman while travelling on Akure-Ilesa Expressway is unsettling. His car was shot at, at Ile-Oluji Junction. Was Falae a target? Did the policeman know that the Afenifere chieftain was in the car? Was it the motive for shooting at his car? Falae was said to be on his way to Ile-Ife to join other Afenifere leaders on a courtesy visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, when his car was shot at. He was said to have escaped by the whiskers. Speaking with journalists at Ile-Ife about his experience before the meeting of the Afenifere Leaders with Ooni Ogunwusi, Falae said: “I was initially kidnapped; now they want to kill me. I was coming from Akure, approaching Ilesa. I saw some vehicles ahead of me. There was a bullion van in front. The vehicles ahead of us were overtaking the bullion van and we too followed.
“I had nearly passed them when I heard a shot and a bang on my car. We stopped and we saw that they had fired at our car. They did n’t stop. We stopped at Erin-Ijesha and complained to the police at the checkpoint that we were fired at by some policemen following a bullion van at Ile-Oluji Junction. I’m entertaining fear over the continuous attack on me. I don’t know why I was kidnapped recently, why I was arrested in 1997 and locked up for two years.”
The elderstatesman and Leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Falae, may be imputing some political or assassination motive to the shooting of his vehicle and he may be right to feel that way given his recent abduction. The incident deserves to be thoroughly investigated. But the hunch is an overzealous policeman escorting the bullion van may just be out perpetrating their normal disgusting act. Policemen escorting bullion vans normally take unnecessary umbrage at vehicles overtaking them. This should stop! Such vehicles have a right of way as well. The policemen can only stop such vehicles if they suspect they are up to some untoward acts.
