At least 12 corpses kept in the morgue of the Anatomy Department of Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile Ife, Osun State were on Tuesday burnt when fire gutted the morgue.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olanrewaju, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said about 102 bodies were kept in the morgue when the fire said to have been caused by power surge started around 3 :00 am Tuesday.
According to him, the timely intervention of the men of Security and Fire Services Unit of the university put the situation under control.
The statement reads , “the fire, which broke out at 3:00 am today , (Tuesday, 19th November, 2019) was caused by electricity surge which affected a section of the Morgue where corpses are kept. Out of about 102 bodies that were kept in the Morgue, 12 were affected by the fire outbreak.
“The department has made detailed arrangements to duly and adequately inform those who have kept bodies (corpses) in the morgue.
Olanrewaju stated further that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede and other principal officers had visited the scene to assess the level of damage and instructed immediate repairs to the affected areas.
He added that the VC has also constituted a three-member committee to look into the immediate and remote causes of the fire outbreak.
Also, the Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State command, Folasade Odoro who confirmed thag no life was lost in the incidents said that the detectives from the command were already investigating the cause of the incident.
