As Nigerians look forward to a glorious 2014 in the sporting world, the
Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable
Gbenga Elegbeleye, has challenged
the country’s sportsmen and women to brace up for the challenges ahead.
In his New Year message to the athletes, Elegbeleye, who expressed delight
at the successes
recorded in the year 2013, said consolidation and improvement should be
the
main target of Nigeria in the year 2014, hence the need for every athlete to
be
well-prepared for the various events.
Nigeria won
the Africa Cup of Nations, the FIFA U-17 World Cup and also did well in
various
sporting meets particularly the IAAF World Athletics Championship,
Moscow 2013, where Blessing Okagbare won silver and bronze medals,
feats that excited the
former federal lawmaker.
Elegbeleye said: ‘’There is
no doubt that we achieved in year 2013 but we should not allow that to
distract us
from what we have ahead of us in the New Year. That is why I am charging
various athletes to redouble their efforts in ensuring that more laurels are
won for the country.
‘’This year
is going to be a busy year going by the various events coming up. We have
the
2014 CHAN and World Cup for the Super Eagles, the women teams will
also be
campaigning in various categories, there is the Commonwealth Games. You
will
thus agree with me that we need to be at our best to excel.’’
The former
deputy chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports, assured
all
athletes of the NSC’s support, adding that the commission would on its
part
continue to give them the best of motivation to make sure that they excel.
He called on the sports people to display a high sense of commitment and
discipline in their
various sports..
On a
general note, Elegbeleye urged every Nigerian to pray for the unity of the
country, which he said was very important if the country hoped to achieve
positive results in every sector this year.
