Seven Oyo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirants have expressed their dissatisfaction with the way and manner in which the Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong – led State Monitoring Committee conducted itself on the re-scheduled Ward Congress of the party on Monday.
In a petition jointly signed by the aggrieved aspirants and made available to journalists, Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala
Ayoade Adeseun, Engr. Femi Babalola, Dr. Isaac Owolabi
Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi and
Prof. Soji Adejumo held that the rescheduled ward congress never held as was purportedly reported by the leader of Monitoring Committee, Dr. Idi Hong.
The petition reads: “At about 11am on Monday, all the Governorship Aspirants except Senator Teslim Folarin got to the State Secretariat of our party and went into close-door meeting with the Congress Ward Monitoring Committee headed by Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong to work out the modality for the conduct of the Congress.
“Parties and members of the Ward Congress Committee agreed on the system earlier adopted to by the stakeholders and the Senator David Mark – led Integration and Reconciliation Committee for the South West on 24th October, 2014 that the Local Government Monitoring Committee would include a representative of each Stakeholder and only results signed by these representatives would be valid and acceptable”.
The petitioners added that it was agreed at the meeting with the said Ward Congress Monitoring Committee that election materials be distributed to the various Local government Chairmen who would be accompanied by the representatives of the stakeholders to the various local government offices of the party.
Dr. Hong was said to have informed the aspirants that only photocopies of the result sheets would be distributed and used for the congress while they would keep the Original and that the original copies would only be filled after the election.
The petitioners stated that immediately the distribution of election materials to local party chairmen were concluded on Monday, thugs allegedly engaged by one of the aspirants brought out guns and machetes and descended on the said Chairmen, forcefully carting away the result forms. The thugs according to them were the boys that came with Alhaji Lateef Akinsola a.k.a Tokyo, a former Chairman of the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), allegedly sympathetic to Senator Teslim Folarin.
The concerned aspirants insisted there was no election anywhere in Oyo State and therefore distanced themselves from the public statement credited to Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong in which he reportedly said the exercise was successful, saying it was a surprise that he could be part of the conspiracy to impose a candidate on the party in the state.
The aspirants therefore stressed that the results submitted by the State Ward Congress Committee was fraudulent and accepting such to favour Senator Folarin will only lead to more chaos which will not augur well for the party in 2015.
