Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has stressed the need to ensure that the 2018 planned census holds, saying it will help the Federal Government in its policy formulation and economic planning at this difficult period for the nation.
Speaking when he received a delegation from the National Populations Commission (NPC), yesterday at Government House Benin City, Vanguard gathered that the governor admonished the commission to collaborate with local government authorities as it prepares for the exercise so as to get the correct figure of Nigeria’s population.
Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki “For us as a government, my administration is ready to support you when conducting the Edo State Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD), in preparation for the proposed 2018 census exercise. And honestly, I will say the nation is overdue for another census because it is supposed to be periodic so as to help government plan its policies and programmes for the people.
“But let me also advise that the commission should collaborate with the local government authorities so that you can get correct figures of deaths and births in the areas. Now that we are conducting the exercise, I think it is better we do it right to ascertain our actual figure as a nation,” he stated.
Leader of the NPC delegation, Dr Tunde Lakoju, who is the federal commissioner, representing the state in the commission, disclosed that the commission had commenced EAD in the state, adding that the 2018 census would hold as scheduled.
