As part of the efforts to boost food production and enhance food sufficiency in the State, Osun State Government through Central Bank of Nigeria Anchor Borrowers Intervention Program (ABP) has distributed inputs to 2,038 maize farmers in the State.
The State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola who was represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon Adedayo Adewole, stated this at the flag-off ceremony of agriculture input distribution of CBN/MAAN/UNITY BANK tagged ; Anchor Borrowers’ Programme(ABP) held at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Commercial Farm.
The inputs distributed to the maize farmers were fertilizers, maize seeds, Agro chemicals, soil conditioners(DFO) among others.
Adewole stated that the Governor has been working round the clock to make sure that farmers in the state are empowered to enjoy the dividend of democracy.
He appreciatey the CBN and other stakeholders for projecting the initiative of Osun government to make life meaningful for farmers and to revitalize the agriculture sector in the state.
Speaking earlier, the Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Osun state office, Engr. Sunday Atoyebi appreciated the CBN and the State Government for their collaborative efforts and empowerment programmes provided for farmers so that food would be in abundant in the state.
Also speaking, the CBN, Head of Development Finance office, Osun state branch, Mrs Oluyemisi Adebayo stressed that the purpose of the Anchor Borrowers Program is to enable the nation reduce its huge food import bill and conserve the foreign reserves adding that the ABP loan is majorly in kind rather than cash as such inputs and services are provided to the farmers directly.
She disclosed that some group of farmers in the State had benefited from the APB programme in the areas of Fishery, Poultry, Rice and Cotton productions.
The Zonal Coordinator, Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) Mr Benjamin Adewunmi, appreciated the efforts of the Governor towards the farmers’ success story in the state, stressing that the program is one of the programs that could take maize farmers to greater heights urging maize farmers to register with the association to get Government’s recognition.
