Communication giant Globacom is widely known as a major sponsor of events in the country, local and international. Remember the annual CAF/Globacom Football Awards, Glo African Voices on CNN and back home the Ojude Oba Festival in the hometown of Globacom boss Chief Mike Adenuga. But attempts by the communication giant to enter through the backdoor during the coronation at the weekend of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, with its billboards, banners, posters and fliers inscribed with the paraphernalia of the coronation without official clearance had backfired. Officials of Oyo State Government fired back slamming Globacom for trying to profit where it has not sowed anything, without either officially sponsoring the event or getting official clearance for the use of the insigna of the coronation. The state government debunked the impression that Globacom is sponsoring the activities for the coronation. Senior Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, said no sponsor had been accredited to manage the installation ceremony of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland. He said it was embarrassing to the state government to see posters and billboards of corporate bodies around the town, posing to be sponsors of the coronation.
