Water is one of the most basic needs of man, we all drink water and crave for it. Though some of us don’t drink water as we should, denying ourselves the refreshing benefits of this natural liquid. I don’t think there’s anyone alive that can deny the fact that sometimes a simple glass of water can be more satisfying than a cup of coffee or a can of soda. Here are the 7 experiences that signify you are not drinking water.
Dry mouth; if your mouth is dry, chances are, you’re mildly dehydrated. Drinking water lubricates the mucus membranes in your mouth and throat, which keeps your mouth saturated with saliva. Sugary drinks are only a temporary solution to a larger problem. Be sure to keep a bottle of water with you at all times.
Parched skin: this one of the earliest signs of chronic dehydration, which can lead to larger problems. Lack of water reduces sweat, which renders the body’s inability to wash away excess dirt and oil accumulated throughout the day. It could make your skin look old and cause premature wrinkles.
Constipation and digestive problems: Water lubricates your digestive tract, which keeps things moving smoothly. The lack of fluids dries fecal masses, causing it to stick to the sides of your colon and become difficult to pass off. This also applies to the entire digestive system. Lack of proper hydration, the amount and strength of mucus in the stomach lessens, allowing stomach acid to do some major damage to your intestine. This could cause heart burn and indigestion.
Reduced urination; when your urine is a darker shade of yellow, your body is telling you it’s lacking proper hydration. In extreme cases, dehydration can lead to urinary tract infections. It is advisable you consult a doctor right away. The lack of urine is a main sign of having no excess fluids to expel.
Joint pains; Cartilage protecting and cushioning your joints is composed of 79 percent water, so when there is not much consumption of water, you begin to feel pains. Dehydration can cause the cartilage to deteriorate and result in arthritis, joint pain and spinal pain.
You experience hunger pangs; not drinking enough water makes you consume more food than needed. Studies have shown that two glasses of water before each meal help people lose an average of 15 pounds over three months. It was five pounds more than the non-water drinkers. When you consume food it creates more work for your body, but drinking water purifies your organs and supplies it with the fuel it needs. Before you have a meal, do take water and make sure it isn’t too much.
It increases stress and fatigue; it is scientifically proven that dehydration is the number one cause of stress. Even mild dehydration of 2 – 4% can raise levels of cortisol- your stress hormone. Not drinking enough water can also crash your metabolism, decrease blood pressure and disrupt fluid balance. Your heart struggles to deliver oxygen and nutrients to different tissues. It causes headaches, lethargy and stress.
