President Mohammadu Buhari has transmitted a letter of proclamation of the 8th National Assembly to the Clerk, Salihu Maikasuwa.
He directed the Clerk of the National Assembly to convene the new session on Tuesday, June 9, 2015.
National Assembly sources said Buhari’s proclamation was received on Wednesday 3rd June.
This came as the move by the All Progressives Congress to adopt a consensus candidate for the position of the Senate Presidency collapsed on Thursday.
The APC leadership had slated a meeting with Senators-elect and House members-elect for the International Conference Centre, Abuja but later cancelled the meeting.
Former Kwara State governor, Senator Bukola Saraki is pitted against Senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe who enjoys the backing of the APC leadership.
The Saraki group who appears not to enjoy the favour of the party leadership protested to the APC, asking the party to hands off from the choice of Senate leadership.
Giving the seeming impasse in APC, the PDP’s 45 Senators-elect may hold the ace in determining who emerges next Senate President.
