It was a race against plastic pollution at the Eleguchi Beach Resort today as Nigerians from all across the state and the nation came together to partake in a marathon race to mark the World Environment Day.
The campaign against the indiscriminate dumping of waste was intensified at the 2021 World Environment Day event.
Themed ‘ A Race Against Plastic Pollution’ the event organised by Statewide Waste and Environmental Education Foundation, SWEEP Fondation, was aimed at creating more awareness on issues of environment, wastes creation and disposal, environmental sustainability and waste management.
Commending the organisers of the event, the MD/CEO of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency, LAWMA, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, who was well represented described the initiative as a brillant one. He stressed the need for Nigerians to change their mentality towards waste by doing away with the culture of indiscriminate dumping of waste.
He explained that with the Lagos Waste Initiative, Lagosians for the first are getting value for their waste by way of the incentive that was introduced at the monthly raffle draw introduced to encourage active subscribers on the Pakam Application. Pakam is an application designed by LAWMA to encourage individual and collective participation in the state’s recycling initiative.
‘We are not just here today to pick plastic waste but to create an environmental concious mindset. It is the duty of everyone to ensure that Lagos is clean and it starts from your immediate environment.’
