Anu Nimofe

Bukola Adebayo, a.k.a “Aanu Nimofe” or BukkyMercy,” is a budding gospel talent. Aside singing, she is also engaged in other businesses like soap-making, production of haircream, beads-making, fashion designing, baking of cakes, chin-chin, bags-making with Ankara fabric and making of dusting powder. She speaks in an interview with ADEOLA OLADELE on what inspired her to be a gospel musician among other things…

Educated at University of Ado-Ekiti…

My name is Bukola Seyi Adebayo. I am from Offa, Kwara State. I had my primary school education at Itafa Primary School, Kwara State and finished there in 1996. Thereafter, I proceeded to Anglican College of Commerce, Offa, Kwara State for my secondary education and finished in 2002. I had my NCE at Oro College of Education, Kwara State in 2007. I graduated from the University of Ado-Ekiti in 2013 where I studied Educational Management. I did my mandatory NYSC between 2013 and 2014 at the Government College, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Career as gospel singer…

I started singing when I was still a little girl at the age of ten years. I was among the children choir in my church then at First Baptist Church.

Why gospel music?

God did it. It was not my intention to be a gospel singer. When I was among the choir in my church then, I did compose songs for my choir and each time we went for choir ministration, our choir master then would ask me to take the vocal aspect. I could recall one day our choir master called me and said: “Sister Bukky, God wants to use you for His glory.” When he told me that, I laughed at him and said that a sinner like me would not be useful for God.

Some years after then, my Pastor called me again and said God wanted to use me in singing His praise.

Albums to her credit…

To God be the glory, I have two albums to my credit. They are “Aanu nimofe” and “Iji aye mi dake,” which is the latest in the market. I’m still working on another album, which will be released soon.

Achievements in gospel music industry…

Thanks so much for the question. I have lots of achievements. But the most important achievement I made is that people do listen to my music and their responses to my music make me happy a lot.

Challenges in gospel music industry…

There are lots of challenges, which range from lack of financial assistance, devoted band, lack of promoters and lack of marketers.

Other engagements aside singing…

I am a graduate. I am into production of hair cream, dusting powder, toilet soaps, fashion designing, bead-making, baking of cakes, chin-chin, etc.

Prospect in the gospel music in Nigeria…

Well, gospel music is progressing in Nigeria, because different gospel musicians are coming out. Today, we have many gospel musicians in the industry, but the Bible has made it clear that many were called but few were chosen. What I can say is that, gospel music in the country is growing faster, but needs some reforms.

Advice for fellow gospel musicians…

I will advise them to wait upon the Lord and not to run beyond their destiny. Similarly, they should know the type of songs they sing and they should allow God to be their guide in whatever they do.
