Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has a chummy relationship with South African President Jacob Zuma.
The relationship may have been developed when both were vice presidents, Atiku to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Zuma to President Mbeki.
But at the weekend in Durban, South Africa, former vice president tried to exploit this relationship to drum support for Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, who is vying for the presidency of the African Development Bank.
Adesina, one of the shining lights of the President Goodluck Jonathan regime, is Nigeria’s official candidate in the ADB race.
Atiku led Adesina and a few others to a meeting with Zuma at the Presidential Residence in Durban.
There are other reports that it was the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari that despatched Atiku to South Africa to meet with Zuma over Adesina.
Details of the meeting are not clear but it was ostensibly to get the backing of the South African president for Adesina.
Also on the trip is Senator Dominigo Obende from Edo State.
