Cement firm, Lafarge Africa Plc., has been honoured with the “Recycling Institution of the Year Award” by Africa Clean-Up Initiative (ACI).
The award was presented to the company during the 2021 Africa Clean Up Conference and Award which was held in Lagos recently.
The event had civic leaders, nation builders, environmentalists, government officials and agencies across Africa to share ideas, knowledge and proffer solutions to issues on sanitation, climate change, recycling and waste management, as well as deliberate on environmental issues confronting member countries.
Lafarge was specially acknowledged for the development of products, technologies and investments that have improved the quality of recycling and waste management in Africa.
“We are proud of the recognition that Africa Clean-Up Initiative (ACI) provides,” said Lafarge Africa Plc., Head of Geocycle, Daniel Adedokun while receiving the award.
“At Lafarge Africa Plc., we are committed to reducing our ecological footprint at all stages in the life cycle of our products.
“This commitment is highlighted by the safe co-processing of waste from our operations and the use of non-recyclable waste or biomass adopted across our value chain through innovative initiatives that bring us closer to a thriving zero-waste world.
“Our biomass project involves the use of agricultural waste to reduce waste from our society in line with our commitment to circular economy.
“This project has successfully empowered local communities, including youths while creating over 3000 jobs in various local communities. In 2020 alone a total of 35,221 tons of biomass were supplied to our plants by local suppliers at Ewekoro, Sagamu and Ashaka,” he added.
It will be recalled that Lafarge Africa Plc., earlier this year received the 2021 Gold Award for Customer Service Excellence at the West Africa Innovation Awards.
It also won the Institute of Directors (IoD) Nigeria Corporate Governance Award 2021 and the Brandcom 2021 Most Consistent Brand in Sustainability Award.
