Lagos Assembly Not Witch-Hunting Ambode – Majority Leader

Okunade Adekunle

The Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, has said that members of the House of Assembly was not witch-hunting the Governor of the State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, saying that all they want from the Governor is to explain to the House the infractions noticed in 2018 budget and 2019 budget which is yet to be presented.

Agunbiade who cleared the air on the allegation that the lawmakers are against the Governor because they want Ambode to finance their campaigns, saying that they are doing everything in the interest of Lagosians.

He added that it was the fundamental right of the protesters who protested today concerning issue, saying that it is imperative for the assembly to enlighten the public on the issue.

Agunbiade who addressed newsmen immediately after the lawmakers ended their 3hours closed door emergency parliamentary session, explained that failure by the Governor to appear before the House on the 4th of February would make the lawmakers to activate his impeachment process as stated in the 1999 Nigeria Constitution.

“All we are doing is in the interest of all Lagosians. We are not witch-hunting the Governor and we will want the public to know that we never ask or seek any financial help from him regarding our campaigns”, said Agunbiade

” Today alone, about 5 groups had visited this House of Assembly to plead on behalf of the Governor and we told them that issue before us is not that we don’t want the Governor to continue. He is still the governor of the state and we take him as the governor of the state. We want the public to know that the major issue in contention is the 2019 Appropriation Bill which by now we think it should have been before the House of Assembly”, said Agunbiade

” The laying of the 2019 budget according to the Constitution is expected to be laid before the House before new fiscal year which is January to December and that is what we have been seeing in Lagos House of Assembly in past years. Even this current government had brought appropriation bills before new fiscal years three times “, said Agunbiade

“The Constitution stated that the budget must be brought to the House and laid before the House unless this is followed the budget is yet to get to the House” said Agunbiade

The Majority Leader explained further that it is unless the Assembly approves any budget that the executive can spend out of it on behalf of government, saying up till now the Assembly is yet to have the budget.

” We have got to know that expenditure is now incurred by the executive and warrant of payments has been issued on a budget that is yet to be presented and approved by the House”, said Agunbiade

” We implore the Governor to take advantage of the window to explain the infractions identified by the House in our last sitting. If we are after war, we would not have given him the opportunity to defend himself and of course we are expecting he would walk in and take the opportunity of the window and look at the issues” said Agunbiade

” If he fails to appear to iron out the issues surrounding warrant of payments and infractions noticed in 2018 , we will use the instrument of the law which deals with the offences which is impeachment”
