ALVES MAY LEAVE BARCA

Barcelona star defender Dani Alves doesn’t sound too keen on continuing his career with the club in the future, providing a stern message about where his head is at, via ESPN FC on Twitter.

Alves has had a trying season with Barca. He was the victim of racist taunts against Villarreal in April when a fan threw a banana at him on the pitch. The fan was arrested and given a lifetime ban, but the emotional scars of the event aren’t something you just get over.

He did try to make light of the horrific situation by eating the banana, seemingly winking at the idiocy of the fan by showing him that these attacks weren’t going to phase him while he’s at work.

However, as far as things on the field go, Alves and Barcelona aren’t exactly simpatico. He has just one year left on the contract he signed in 2011 and is reportedly drawing interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

According to L’Equipe, via Matthew Law of Sports Mole, PSG is expected to make “an offer for the Brazilian at the end of the season, with the French side confident of agreeing terms with the full-back.”

Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC also said that Alves has had problems with the coaching situation at Barca and isn’t exactly thrilled about the potential addition of Celta Vigo’s Luis Enrique.

When you have a player who is nearing the end of a deal, threatening to leave and has problems with the front office, the writing is very much on the wall. Barring a last-second Hail Mary, a divorce seems likely.

Alves is 31 and showing signs of aging. He’s been less effective recently, with five goals and 11 assists over the last two years compared to six goals and 34 assists from 2010 to 2012. A move away from Barca, which is a toxic environment for him, has the potential to rejuvenate his career.
