Foyinbo Jubril, a coach with the Golden Boxing Club, Lagos Island, has said that its second boxing fiesta is aimed at promoting talented amateur boxers.
Jubril said in Lagos that the competition has been scheduled to hold at the Campus Mini Stadium on the Island, to discover budding talents in the sport.
The official, who is also the competition’s technical manager, added that, the tournament will hold on April 19 for grassroots boxers to display their skills.
“Our mission is to explore from the abundant talents among the youth and to promote talented youth boxers to showcase their skills in a serene atmosphere,” Jubril said.
The maiden edition of the competition took place on December 18, 2010, where about eight talented boxers were discovered and trained to become professionals.
He said that the competition was affiliated with the Lagos amateur boxing association, in conjunction with the Lagos Island East Local Government, to build upcoming champions.
Jubril appealed to private organisations to sponsor competitions that would engage the youth, so that they would not be roaming about the streets as hoodlums.
“Our mandate is to engage the youths and discourage them from engaging in social vices in their communities,” he said.
The coach advised the youths to choose boxing as a career, saying that, the sport can provide them global recognition.
“Our country is endowed with talented athletes who can be discovered through continuous competitions,” he said.
He urged the state government to provide modern gyms in all council areas in the state, to enhance the development of the game at the grassroots.
