APC Convention: Governor Buni Under Pressure

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s warning to the All Progressives Congress leadership to put its acts together and organise its convention lest the opposition Peoples Democratic Party will take over power in 2023, the National Caretaker Committee headed by Mallam Mai Bala Buni, is now under intense pressure to organise the convention.

Within 24 hours after the airing of that interview by Channels Television, Buni, the chairman of the panel who is also the governor of Yobe State, had sought audience with the president.

Competent sources told WESTERN POST that at the meeting, Buni assured the president the convention would be conducted and a new leadership would soon emerge.

But the thorny issue now is whether Chairman Buni would seek to transmute into a substantive chairman.

The chairman has been alleged to be rooting to become the substantive chair, even though some of the party’s governors are opposed to the plan and had demanded he resign if he wanted to contest.

WP learnt the plan of Buni is to cling the chairmanship as a buffer to becoming the running mate to any Southern presidential candidate of the party and, if they win, become vice president.

Already, a meeting to thrash out the date of the party’s convention was initially slated to hold tomorrow in Abuja as Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong was earlier reported to have said the governors would meet tomorrow in Abuja to pick a date for the convention.

However, as it emerged, the meeting will now hold next Wednesday as sources claimed Governor Lalong was misquoted on the date.

Inaugurated in June 2020 after the sacking of the Comrade Adams Oshiomohole-led National Working Committee of the party, the caretaker committee was charged with the responsibilities of reconciling aggrieved party members and preparing grounds for a new convention.

But after three postponements, the committee is yet to do the job it was saddled with until the president’s outburst.

The Director-General, Progressives Governors’ Forum, Dr Salihu Lukman, had in an open letter warned against ant further postponement of the February date for the convention.

There are cases in court challenging the legality of the Buni Committee, the latest being the one recently instituted by five members of the party in Abuja.
