Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has appointed Malam Yusuf Alli (SAN) as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the state university, UNIOSUN.
The governor announced the appointment during the inauguration of Board Members of the Governing Council of the University on Monday in Osogbo.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), other members of the council are Prof. Solomon Akinboye, Dr (Mrs) Abeke Omotosho, Prof. Kasali Adegoke, Sir Benjamin Aladekomo, Mr. Tunde Ponle and Prof. Charles Abiodun Alao.
Aregbesola said no university could be greater than its council, adding that a university would either rise to the level of its council or shrink to its size.
The governor said this informed the careful selection of the chairman and members of the governing council of the institution.
Aregbesola charged the newly-inaugurated Council to come up with ideas on raising funds for the institution without passing the burden on the students.
He said the time has come for universities to break from the past, noting that the situation at hand calls for innovation where things cannot be done in the old ways.
“Our country in the past has been awash with oil money, the universities have developed the lazy practice of living on proprietor’s subvention; while the mean ones put a heavy burden of tuition on the students.
“However, increasing tuition has only increased the social gap in the society, keeping the children of the poor out of the universities, with dire consequences. There should be new thinking and new approaches to raising funds for the universities”.
