Artists Are Beautifying Lagos Under-Bridges In Other To Drive Away Miscreants-Akinsola


Special Adviser and Acting Commissioner for Tourism,Arts and Culture in Lagos State,Mrs Adebimpe Akinsola today said Governor Akinwumi Ambode has commissioned some artists in Lagos to beautify under -bridges in Lagos so as to drive away miscreants in many of our under -bridges.Akinsola said this when journalists asked the commissioner questions during the 2017 ministerial press briefing, when her ministry briefed the press.

According to Mrs Akinsola,Polly Alakija has being commissioned to beautify major areas on the island which includes Falomo under bridge, noting that other artists which have being selected would follow suit.

The commissioner also disclosed that the state is set to restructure film and video distribution as well as construct six new theatres and museum to correct identified gaps in the current framework.

According to her “there is a plan to carry out a total overhaul of the current operational procedures for implementing film and video distribution in Lagos State with a view to achieving an effective and profitable distribution of all entertainment products.”

Akinsola said the ministry would  identify, assign and register community retailers into their respective territories, provide and generate an Operating Code for all registered retailers, ensure visible distribution territories across the state as legally recognized infrastructure, licensed State and Local Government Distributor.

She reiterated that the restructuring would lead to visible infrastructure in support of the entertainment industry, financial empowerment of the entertainment industry towards accelerated development and a sustainable and systematic attack on Piracy.

In the same win-win spirit of using entertainment to promote tourism and to ensure that all parts of the State feel the impact of the New Year Countdown, the present administration conceptualize hosting the event in the five divisions of the State using the platform to turn the entire state into one community; celebrating change and the achievements of the past year with a strong expression of hope for the New Year.
She explained that in the process, the entire city State was turned into one big entertainment hub never before experienced in sub-Saharan Africa with an eight-day show laced with flamboyant multi-cultural expressions across the five divisions of the State. Said she; “The customized stages inscribed with location names – Agege, Ikorodu, Epe, Lagos and Badagry, resonate with beautiful lighting designs and sounds of joy and happiness. Lagosians were treated to an all-inclusive series of events including music, food, drinks, comedy, dance and theatre, and Talent Hunt competition to discover and develop young and talented artist for spanning from the 24th to 31st of December  2016, till the early hours of 1st January, 2017.
“Over 50 renowned major artistes and hundreds of aspiring artist performed for over 500 hours in a “one community, one celebration and one purpose” approach. The expanded venue format, infusion of cultural elements of the communities and creation of socio-economic opportunities beyond the Lagos metropolis, threw up unprecedented economic gains as artisans were engaged, food and snacks vendors and consumer brands thrived in areas earlier considered unprofitable” she said.

Going further, she said the  locations of the yet to be constructed theatres and museum are; Epe, Badagry, Yaba, Alimoso and Ikorodu that the State Government will continue to invest in infrastructure and will not hesitate to intervene where necessary to ensure the realisation of its vision to make the state one of the top ten destinations for tourism and entertainments in Africa.

Speaking on the Lagos@50 celebrations which 12 member Committee headed by Professor Wole Soyinka and Late Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi inaugurated February 2016, the Commissioner stated that the yearlong Countdown to the state’s 50th Anniversary began 27th May 2016 with a series of colloquia and divisional activities held to celebrate the rich history and culture of the state saying the celebration of the last 50 days of the countdown to 27thMay 2017 commenced 8th April 2017 with the Musical Stage Play WAKAA.

“The celebration emphasizes the need to showcase and harness the creative talents in arts, craft, culture and entertainment industry to promote economic growth and development. This is in line with the main focus of the golden jubilee anniversary, which is to take stock of the outstanding developments achieved by the state in all spheres in the past five decades and to use this as the basis to chart the parts for future economic and all round development of the state recognizing the diversity of its citizenry and preserving its history and heritage”.

She listed some of the major activities and events of the last 50 days of the Lagos@50 celebrations as including Wakaa, The musical held 8th April, 2017, Terra Kulture Arena V.I, Lagos held 13-15, April, 2017, Fela: The Broadway Musical in Concert, EKO Hotels, Lagos 15th April, 2017, Boat Regatta slated for Epe, Ikorodu, Badagry & Lagos Island 30th April, 2017, JAZZ Meets Fashion, EKO Hotels, Lagos 5th May, 2017, Lagos Love the Cinema, Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Epe 6Th May, 2017 Lagos Dance Exhibition (Contemporary Dance Troupes) EKO Hotels, Lagos 12th May, 2017 and Celebrating Social Clubs 13th May, 2017,
