The Alumni association of Administrative Staff College, Badagry- Lagos is to give award of excellence to honour the governors of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose and its Gombe counterpart, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwabo for their various contributions in infrastructural and human capacity development in the country.
The Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) was established in 1972 to train and build human and institutional capacity for performance improvement in both public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy.
The ASCON Alumni Association (AAA) was established in 1998 and the membership of the ALUMNI cuts across the civil service, private sector.
Disclosing this while having a chat with newsmen in Lokoja.the President of the Alumni, Mr Zacheaus Jonathan lamented that there is currently a low level of quality, effective and efficient leadership in every sector of the society, a situation which he said has impacted negatively on the nation’s psyche and its productivity.
According to him most of the people who found themselves in positions of authority today were neither not prepared for the positions or inadequately trained which he said often cause policy somersault and lack of continuity in our social and political lives.
In his words ” we give our upcoming generation hope, we strive not to criticize anybody but look at the good side of people in leadership to encourage them to do more, that is why we are organizing an award of leadership Excellency for some leaders to encourage them to do more at time like this.
“The ASCON Alumni Association has closely followed national political discourse and developments in the past few years. It notes, in particular, the passionate zeal and extraordinary commitment and boldness demonstrated by the Ekiti state governor, Dr Peter Ayo Fayose and the governor of Gombe state Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.
“The duo have brought landmark achievements in diverse areas and sectors of their respective States including such critical areas as road construction, education, health, agriculture, water supply, housing, youth development, security, among others.
“This is because ASCON Alumni Association acknowledges achievements outside of its fold to celebrate outstanding achievements by Nigerians in various fields of endeavours. It is in this regard that the Association has decided to institute an Award for Leadership Excellence.
“The purpose of this Award is to recognize and reward individuals in positions of political and corporate leadership who have excelled in bringing about transformation and development in their domains of leadership or organizations. It is hoped that such recognition will create a pool of leadership role models which will serve as inspiration to the younger generation.
“The leadership award is predicated on the premise that leadership, more than any factor, makes a difference in the life of a nation, an organization and indeed any human institution.
“History teaches us that leadership constitutes the single most important variable that has shaped democratic cultures and ideals in every society, including those we cherish in the much talked about advanced democracies.
“Lessons of experience have also demonstrated that it is leadership that inspires a shared and compelling vision. It is leadership that provides clear direction and a road map for attaining the vision. It is leadership that mobilizes and empowers people to ‘walk the vision’.
“It is leadership that builds relationships that create synergy for superior performance. And it is leadership that initiates and leads change for continuous renewal of nations and organizations not only to surmount day-to-day challenges but to also increase the nation’s or an entity’s fitness for the future,” he added.
