Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State was berated over the kidnap of the wife of the ASUU Chairman of Osun State University, Mrs. Abiona, with ASUU demanding her unconditional release.
Mrs Abiona was kidnapped Friday night and taken to an undisclosed location while her captors were demanding N50million ransom for her release.
Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan after attending a special congress of the union in Osun State, Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Professor Olusegun Ajiboye asked both the Federal Government and Governor Aregbesola to justify the tag of being the Commander-in-Chief and Chief Security Officer of the state respectively by securing the release of Mrs Abiona.
Prof Ajiboye, who said the kidnap was a major challenge to the union, urged the kidnappers to “release our wife, our daughter and our mother unconditionally and unharmed.”
While appealing to the kidnappers to release Mrs. Abiona unconditionally, the ASUU boss said the union has been at the fore front of the fight against injustice in the country and therefore should not be victim of kidnappers.
“The reality of Nigeria has come to us all. I am extremely sad that our country has degenerated this much. I want to appeal to the kidnappers to free their victim unharmed and unconditionally. We are also victims in this country. We are poorly paid. We fight injustices and fight for the downtrodden,” he added.
In the same vein, National Treasurer of the union, Dr Ademola Aremu, bemoaned the silence of Governor Aregbesola over the kidnap, saying his silence was least expected as one who receives security vote to protect the people.
Dr Ademola Aremu while speaking on the kidnap said those who are collecting security votes are to protect the people, adding that “the governor should perform his oversight function. We are not the type to be kidnapped or be visited by armed robbers. It is only politicians that have such money.”
