At Last: Buhari, Saraki Hobnob in Aso Rock

By Samuel Ogundipe

After several months of speculation about a deep animosity, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally met with Senate President Bukola Saraki inside the Presidential Villa on Thursday.

Reports out of the Villa revealed that the two were also joined by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Chief Justice Mahmud Mohammed, amongst other top government functionaries.

The leaders met to celebrate the country’s 55th Independence Day anniversary.

This development is expected to lay to rest the suspicion from several quarters that the president had been ignoring Dr. Saraki due to the controversial way he emerged the leader of the upper chamber on June 9.

“I am hopeful and confident that the future is very bright. In the next few years, things will be even better,” the Senate President told State House newsmen. “It will not be business as usual. We will ensure that the National Assembly will be people-oriented and will make laws that will make impact on Nigerians.”

Relationship between the executive and the 8th Assembly has remained largely strained since principal officers were elected in a controversial circumstance in June. It took a worrisome dimension when the Senate President was docked by the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged false assets declaration, a process that was widely believed orchestrated by the executive.

Mr. Saraki claimed he’s being victimised by vested political interests because of his newly-attained status.

But political analysts say the two key arms of government will eventually settle their grouse and work together for the common good of the country, and this appeared to have manifested on Wednesday after Mr. Buhari forwarded a list of his ministerial nominees to Dr. Saraki for onward screening by the Senate.
