Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to recall all ex-servicemen for a total war against terrorists and other armed groups perpetrating evil across the country.
Abubakar, in a statement titled: “The Time For A Total War On Terror Is Now”, said the security situation in the country is degenerating fast, noting that government must do everything possible to arrest the situation.
According to the former vice president, nowhere is safe again in the country from farms, markets, schools, homes, mosques, churches, and urban areas.
Atiku regretted that the terrorists are spreading their trade away from their base in the north east to as far away as Niger State in north central, which is few kilometers from Abuja.
He said this is the time for President Muhammadu Buhari to show decisive leadership to secure the lives of Nigerians.
“As a former vice chairman of the National Security Council, I am aware that Nigeria has a sizeable population of military veterans, who are alive, and were trained locally and internationally, and it serves no purpose to allow these valuable national assets lie fallow when there is an existential threat to our nation.
“Call them up. Immediately. Mobilise them to the field. The time has come for us to put in all our effort and stamp out this menace from our nation.
“The men and women of Nigeria’s armed forces, whether serving or retired, who restored peace to Lebanon, Liberia, Sierra Leone and São Tomé and Príncipe can, and should be used to do the same in the motherland,” he said.
Abubakar urged government to procure more military hardware for the men in the field, adding that it is unforgivable that terrorists and criminals are better armed than our troops.
