Awe, one of the towns in the Afijio Local Government Area Oyo State, Nigeria, became a Mecca of sorts, as sons and daughters of the ancient town converged to celebrate this year’s Awe Day with pomp and party.
Among the dignitaries in attendance at the well attended event include the Principal Private Secretary to Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who is vying to represent Afijio state constituency in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barr. Seyi Adisa, who many of his admirers described as the beacon of hope to the community.
The week-long celebration created an avenue both young and old to celebrate their heritage, unique culture, which added to the beauty of the ancient town. The epoch-making event also heralded the commissioning of a series of new projects aimed at positively impacting on the quality of life of Awe residents.
Asides the relay of celebratory activities, this year’s Awe Day celebration also afforded the people of Awe the umpteenth opportunity to honour and express total support for Barr. Adisa, who will be representing their local government, Afijio, in the state House of Assembly next year.
“We are proud of our own son, a very cerebral mind, in the person of Barrister Seyi Adisa. He is our flag bearer for the entire Afijio Local Government. We are proud of him and all he stands for, top of which is the people,” said one of the elders at one of the projects’ commissioning event.
Another Awe celebrant who spoke in Yoruba language said: “Seyi o fi igba kan kan fi awon eyan ti e se’re rara, ko de fi ile sile! Inu wa dun si gan ni” (Seyi has never joked with the people, and he has never neglected home. He knows where home is and we are very happy with him).
While giving his remarks at the grand-finale and accompanied by his team, Barr. Adisa himself was copiously grateful for the outpouring of love he has constantly received and still receiving from his people in Awe and the entire Afijio Local Government.
He, however, used the occasion to enjoin his fellow Awe indigenes to get more involved in the next level of unprecedented development that Awe and Afijio at large, now deserve to experience.
In his words: “I can’t be thankful enough for your support. We are on the verge of doing something historic in Awe with my candidacy, which in actual terms is our candidacy. We will succeed by the grace of God, and Afijio will be better for it.”
“I am specifically proud to be an indigene of this great town, and I will continuously play my role in the progress and development of it. My interest to serve is borne of out this thought.”
“I congratulate the Alaawe of Awe, Oba Cornelius Abiola Taiwo, and all the people of Awe on the successful completion of yet another Awe day. Awe a d’araba lagbara Olorun, Awe will definitely grow bigger and bigger, but to achieve this, I enjoin all of us towards increased involvement to make this a reality.”
“Our concept of E JE KA SEYI is wrapped around this, that, we all, Awe indigenes both here and in the Diaspora, need to bring hands and heads together to make Awe and Afijio that home we are continuously proud of.” Barr. Adisa enthused.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who was ably represented by the Honourable Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, led a handful of commissioners and special advisers to the colourful event.
