Tragedy struck on Tuesday in Ondo State as no fewer than five delegates to the Second National Council meeting of the Niger Delta holding in Igbokoda in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident.
The delegates, whose identities were unknown as the time of filling this report, were travelling from Akure to Igbokoda, the riverine area of the state, for the summit which Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was to chair.
Also, four other delegates were injured in the accident that occurred at Ode-Aye, a sleepy town along Okitipupa-Igbokoda Road.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Nigerian Police in the state, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the accident. He said the accident was caused by high speed.
According to him, three vehicles were involved in the accident, adding that the vehicles were damaged beyond recognition.
The PPRO also said the corpses had been deposited at the mortuary of the state Specialist Hospital, Okitipupa, where the injured victims are also receiving treatment.
He said efforts were on by the state government and the police to give proper medical treatment to the injured victims.
Meanwhile, Vice President Osinbajo has arrived the International Events.Centre, Akure for the crucial council meeting on Niger Delta.
The Vice President had earlier paid a courtesy visit on the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, in his palace.
Osinbajo was received at the Akure airport by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and some state government officials.
