According to reports filtering in from Borno State, Boko Haram insurgents Saturday morning attacked a military barracks near the University of Maiduguri.
It was learnt that the attackers tried to infiltrate the barracks around 2am, using explosives and high calibre weapons, but were repelled by soldiers.
Heavy explosions and gunshots were heard around the area even as residents of University of Maiduguri staff quarters attempted to flee their homes. They were, however, deterred by the locked gates of their quarters.
The insurgents apparently fled after two hours when they were unable to achieve their objective.
Incidentally, a similar attack on the same barracks a month ago led to the death of about 200 Boko Haram insurgents.
Meanwhile, the pan northern socio-political organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum, on Friday accused the military and other security operatives of complicity in the activities of the Boko Haram sect in the north-eastern part of the region.
The Forum believed that the activities of the insurgents were boosted by the cooperation and support from within the military and security agents, which had enhanced the capabilities of the terrorists.
