In a move that may further unsettle the rank of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),the Court of Appeal in Abuja has nullified the election of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
The state elections tribunal, which sat in Abuja had earlier voided Wike’s election but he appealed the verdict of the lower court at the appellate court.
But this afternoon, the court of appeal ruled that Wike was not validly elected.
Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem, reading the leading judgement of the Court of Appeal, which lasted two hours, ruled that Wike’s election did not conform with the 2010 Electoral Act as amended.
The five-man panel of the Court of Appeal therefore ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a rerun in 90 days.
Wike and Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are the main candidates in the election.
