A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja has sentenced a former member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Hon. Farouk Lawan, to seven years imprisonment over a $3million bribery.
The judgement was handed down to Lawan on Tuesday in Abuja in a bribery case that has dragged on since 2012.
Justice Angela Ataluka of the court also ordered for the restitution of the collected sum of $500,000.
Lawan was accused of collecting bribe from businessman and then Chairman of Zenon Oil, Mr. Femi Otedola, to remove his name from the list of indicted companies before the House ad hoc committee in respect of the oil subsidy fraud.
The lawmaker was then heading the House Ad hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy probing the ever-increasing oil subsidy claims by oil importers in 2012.
Lawan was found guilty on some counts of the charges for collecting a $500,000 bribe from Otedola in a sting operation. He was subsequently slammed with a seven-year jail term.
