Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila from Lagos State is coasting home to victory as new Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He beat his main opponent, Hon. Umar Bago, by a landslide. Showing gallantry, Bago walked up to Gbajabiamila’s seat and congratulated him.
Most of the House members had begun congratulating Gbajabiamila as his vote tally got to over 250.
358 House members took part in the election.
Gbajabiamila had garnered 280 votes even as the counting was still going on by 6 pm.
In the end, he polled 283 votes to Bago’s 76 votes.
His fellow contestant who stepped down in the thick of negotiation and compromise, Hon. Idris Wase, was elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker
Gbajabiamila is seen as one of the most experienced lawmakers in the country having been in the House since 1999.
Gbajabiamila is the immediate-past Leader of the House. He was initially the Minority Leader in the lead up to the 2015 election.
