The ultimate winner in respect of Saturday’s governorship election in Bayelsa State is yet to be announced as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has collated results from seven local government areas but cancelled the governorship election held on Monday in Southern Ijaw LGA.
According to INEC Returning Officer for the state, the election in the area will hold at a later date.
The election in Southern Ijaw was postponed on Saturday owing to violence by former Niger Delta militants who took over the areas. It was then moved to Monday 10 am.
But the poll in that local government on Monday, according to INEC reports, was again characterised by ballot snatching, thuggery, violence and all form electoral malpractices.
INEC said this has rendered the election inconclusive and a new date would be announced for the poll in Southern Ijaw later.
Results in respect of other local government areas were, however, released on Monday showing Governor Seriake Dickson of the state in clear lead.
Bayelsa has eight local governments and only Southern Ijaw is delaying the final results
Dickson of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)and former governor of the state, Timprey Sylva, are the main candidates in the election.
