Cable Wire Theft: Osun Police Nabs 14-year-old Boy

By Tunde Oyekola

Osun State Police command has arrested a 14-year old boy, Hassan Musa, over allegedly stealing cable wires belonging to Machine Tools Company, Osogbo, Osun State.

The suspect was caught by police personnel attached to 39 Police Mobile Force, who were on guard at the company’s premises along Ikirun Road Osogbo on November 1, 2014.

He was arrested along with two other accomplices – Musa Aliyu, 21 and Salisu Jero, 22 – while stealing the cable wires valued at N350,000.

According to a Police report, a copy of which was made available to the Western Post, the suspects were caught while digging and removing some underground cables suspected to be property of the company.

According to the report: “On 1st November, 2014, our personnel attached to 39 Police Mobile Force, Osogbo, on guard duty at Machine Tools Company along Ikirun Road, Osogbo, caught the men while digging and removing some underground cables suspected to be properties of the company,”

Police Public Relations officer in the Command, Folashade Odoro confirmed that investigations were ongoing by the police to unravel reasons for the theft and whether there were still other suspects on the run.

Odoro added the suspects would be arraigned in court very soon.

She said that Osun State police command would not leave any stone unturned in nabbing and prosecuting criminals, stressing that there was no hiding place for them in the state, adding that the state was reputed for being peaceful and crime-free.

Odoro also said that what was really doing the magic for the command and making it easy for its men and officers was cooperation by the public who never cover up any criminal activities or perceived robbers or criminals by giving information to them from time to time.

“People’s cooperation is another secret. They don’t cover up criminals. Once they suspect any unusual movement or strange faces, they alert us. Of course, criminals know that Osun is a no go area.

“Unlike before when people were afraid of the police to give information to them, people have become very enlightened that if they get any information that has to do with security of lives and property, they inform us.

“They are no longer afraid. Once they notice any strange movement, they will call us. Not long ago, we arrested some robbers from Uyo. They had stolen a vehicle in Uyo and brought it all the way to Osun here. It was broad day light that the people around called us that they had seen some strange movement and faces at Mr Biggs where the robbers took solace.

“Immediately, we sprang into action, arrested them and recovered the vehicle. Following further investigations, we also recovered four vehicles from them.

“Reports had it that after snatching the vehicles, they headed straight for Osun, but when they noticed a very stiff security in the state, they diverted to Kwara. Later, they decided to come to Osogbo to celebrate Salah and that was how we got them and paraded them publicly.”
