Tragedy struck in Ode-Irele, Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State, as a Toyota Camry car ran into a couple, Chief Samuel Ododo and his wife Olufumilayo in front of their house at Gbaleju area of the ancient town.
The late Ododo was a notable chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Irele local government. The incident occurred last Saturday evening.
Apart from the couple, the vehicle also crushed three of the couple’s grandchildren and another old woman, who all sustained various degrees of injuries.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of the car, identified as Abisoye Wobo, who was confirmed drunk, was coming from a burial ceremony in the town, after which he lost the control of the car and ran into the house of the deceased.
The late Ododo was reported to have attended last Saturday’s PDP House of Assembly primary election held in the state on the fateful day, and was relaxing with his wife and grandchildren in front of their house when the incident occurred.
Furious about the incident, the source said the youths of the town trooped out in large numbers, went to the house of the alleged killer, and set the house ablaze.
However, the young driver was said to have fled the town so as not to be by lynched the irate youths.
The Ondo State Police Command and other security agents quickly moved in to prevent further breakdown of law and order in the area.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO ) of the state command, Mr. Wole Ogodo, could not be reached for comments but a police source said investigation into the matter was also ongoing.
It was gathered that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary while the injured are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
But the whereabouts of the killer driver remains yet unknown.
