President Goodluck Jonathan got more than he bargained for on Friday as his visit to the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was marred by students of the institution who threw missiles on his entourage.
The President, accompanied by notable traditional rulers in the South-west and some politicians including Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, had attended the Yoruba Unity Summit organised by the Committee on Yoruba Progress, South-west geo-political zone of the country where the president was endorsed for his re-election in the 2015 general election.
The placards-wielding students of the institution who had converged on the Oduduwa Hall, the venue of the conference to protest what they termed “rot in the educational sector” booed President Jonathan while entering the presidential chopper a few minutes after the summit.
The irate protesters were shouting “ole” “ole” (“thief”, “thief”) at the president and other notable politicians who attended the event.
They brought placards with inscriptions like: “We Condemn Jos Killing of Students, Students Are Not Chicken”, Don’t Sell Education As You Sold Electricity.”, We Demand Total Reversal of 2014 Hiked School Fees, We are Not Responsible For Jonathan’s Ineptitude.” among other inscriptions.
The students who were in their thousand barricaded the road leading to the school’s Sport Centre where the chopper wearing the seal of the federal government and marked Nigerian Air Force, NAF-280 requesting that President Jonathan should address them before departing the campus.
During the unrest, the convoy of President Jonathan was delayed for few minutes as the stidents refused the President and his entourage passage to board the chopper despite pleadings by some security operatives.
The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, who attempted to pacify the angry students was booed as students chorused thief on him.
The vehicle conveying the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade, was not spared as students sat at the front of his vehicle for minutes before he was eventually allowed passage.
While boarding the chopper, some students threw missiles at President Jonathan before they were dispersed by security operatives, although none of the throw missiles touched him.
Some students who had examinations also expressed their displeasure at the condition they were subjected owing to President Jonathan’s visit to the campus.
Most of the students had to treck long distance to their examinations’ venues as there was no vehicular movement on campus and its environs.
However, Yoruba people in the southwest zone of the country at the conference endorsed President Jonathan for a second time of office even as they urge him to help recover their political and social values.
…As Fayose Carpets Obasanjo over Jonathan
By Tunde Oyekola
The frosty relationship between former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and the Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, on Friday, in Ile-Ife, Osun State, re-echoed as the latter lampooned the former for attacking the personality of President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the president can never please the former leader.
Fayose also assured President Jonathan of second term support by the people of South-west.
Fayose, who spoke during the one-day summit organised by Yoruba Concerned Leaders, held at Oduduwa Hall of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile Ife, posited that he had met President Jonathan and advised him against dissipating his energy on pleasing Obasanjo, because even, if the president gives him his blood, the former president would still not be pleased.
He said the allegation by Chief Obasanjo that Jonathan is running a corrupt organization was “bizarre”, declaring that the period the ex-president held the reign of power was riddled with corruption.
He said: “I have told the President that even if he gives his blood, strength and life to former President Obasanjo, he would not support him. We know him more than you know him. He never wanted an independent minded person”.
“You have taken your time to respect human lives by not committing crime against humanity. Obasanjo would not like that approach.
“The more you try to curry Obasanjo, the more he would continue to disparage you. We are not going to curry his favour again, because he does not like people who give him respect.
“He wants you to level the entire North-East like Obasanjo did in Odi.
“He is very corrupt. What happened to the N50 million bribe during the third term struggle?
“As a governor during my first term, my official salary was N300, 000 but what of N10 million we donated during the launch of Obasanjo’s library? These are just few.”
He said that the second term bid of Jonathan had been divinely sealed
and urged Jonathan not to be deterred by criticism from any quarter,
assuring that the people of the South West would vote massively for
his re-election in 2015.
