Home The Politico Countdown to Ekiti 2014. CONVOY ATTACK: PDP, APC CONTINUE TO TRADE BLAMES

By Abdulkareem Olaleye in Ado-Ekiti

The Director-General of Governor Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Hon. Bimbo Daramola, has fingered former governor of Ekiti State and Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate in the June 21 poll in the state, Mr. Ayo Fayose, for the upsurge of violence in the state. Daramola, who described the situation as unfortunate and regrettable, stated a state, which had an unbroken record as the most peaceful state in the country for the past three and half years that Governor Fayemi has been in the saddle is gradually sliding into anarchy and chaos.

Daramola, who also represents Ekiti North 1 Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, said: “In the three and half years that Governor Kayode Fayemi has been on the saddle, even by police report, Ekiti has a record that remains unbeaten as the most peaceful state in the federation”. However, the PDP governorship candidate in the June 21 election in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, has said there was no truth in the claim of the APC that his supporters attacked the convoy of Governor Fayemi on Monday in Ado-Ekiti.

Fayose said, rather it was the APC thugs that attacked his (Fayose’s) supporters and campaign office at Adebayo area of Ado-Ekiti.

In a statement by the Publicity Secretary of PDP, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, he described Fayemi Campaign DG’s claim as barbaric, callous and primitive and a naked wanton display of power. Blaming the security agencies in the state for its poor handling of the crisis, Daramola said, “Politics is a contestation for power and relevance. And you know that where there is a contestation, friction will be generated and if this is badly managed, the manifestation is what we are all seeing now”.

The lawmaker noted that the whole orgy of violence started when PDP had their primaries. According to him, “it was very rancourous, it degenerated to the extent that they were going to set fire on their secretariat”. Daramola, however, exonerated his party from violence rocking the state, saying the entry of Ayo Fayose into Ekiti politics had been attended by some level of violence. “The day he entered town, a bus of Ado-Ekiti Local chapter of APC, which was branded for our candidate, and several cars belonging to staffers of our party were destroyed right in front of our party secretariat in Ajilosun”.

Chronicling the series of attack the PDP had unleashed on the campaign train of APC in recent times, Daramola said, “On the day Fayose came to town, it happened that we were coming back from a campaign rally and right in front of his situation office, around Adebayo, his supporters started firing gunshots and hurling stones at our convoy and nobody will deny the fact that one of our supporters got hit by shrapnel and then something must have hit the vehicle before the guy was hit by shrapnel. “So it is not about the action alone but the intention of the attackers. “Three days ago when we were coming from another rally, right at the same spot, the same thing happened”. Daramola added: “I don’t know why the security agencies are finding it difficult to put the blame where it should be. Before now, we did not witness anything like that, they drive past our situation office and party secretariat, nobody hurl any missiles at them, nobody boo them, nobody says anything to them but when our train passes by theirs, they hurl stones and do all sorts of provocations which we think are premeditated actions.
