Kogi State government has ordered the total lockdown of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of the State as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
This is on the heels of the purported allocation of two yet to be confirmed cases of COVID-19 by the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control NCDC in Kogi State.
The State government has urged the medical personnel who attended to the patient at FMC to go into self-isolation for next 14 days.
The State Governor, Yahaya Bello in this announcement while addressing journalists at Government House in Lokoja on Monday, said the Local government would be lockdown for two weeks starting from 12 midnight of Tuesday, June 2nd ,2020 to stop the spread in the town.
Bello explained that on Wednesday, 27/05/2020 the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control allocated two numbers of COVID-19 cases to Kogi State, noting that this assertion was heavily disputed by the State government.
The governor who still believed that Kogi State is coronavirus free noted that the State government has come out publicly to express reservations with which the cases were allotted to the state by NCDC, stressing that efforts by the state government to confirm the same proved abortive as NCDC officers were not forthcoming.
“Only available information is that the two number, father and son ,a community leader and Immam from Kabba/Bunu Local government area of the state.
“It was reported that the man took ill after receiving stings from bees after attending a particular burial ceremony, managed at a particular health facility in Kabba and subsequently transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja and later taken to Abuja.
Contrary to all known guidelines of NCDC.
“Neither NCDC and FMC had involved the State government at any point before these cases were allegedly transferred to Abuja. This condemnable, but in order to engage in avoidable acrimony that attended the announcement .
“As a state government we shall pursue this to a logical conclusion,” he added
The governor also lamented the inadequacies of NCDC declaring two cases for Kogi State, adding that state government believed in the adage that prevention is better than cure and hence the Commissioner for Health and State Epidemiologist have swung into action for contact tracing where 13 family members were tested all results were negative.
He pointed out that while testing the veracity of the cases, the state government will not take chances, saying that this has already taken a political undertone.
“Like I said in earlier days of COVID-19, I said while Covid 19 is genuine in other climes,
“It is taking a political dimension in Nigeria which is already playing out. We are already seeing it, we don’t know the intension of NCDC , Federal Ministry of Health and all these political jobbers we do not know their interest in Kogi State
He stressed further that State government has decided to be proactive in an effort to contain the spread, adding that there is no option than the community and local government from where it comes from be put under lockdown for weeks.
Bello, therefore, warned that those behind the politicization of COVID-19 to desist , noting that his administration is committed the welfare and all related issues of all citizenry of the State.
