An Osun State Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo has granted bail to a traditional ruler in the State, the Aketewi of Iketewi, Oba David Ogungbemi, his son, Idowu, and one Sarafa Olayiwola who were remanded over the alleged rape and impregnating of a 14-year-old girl.
The monarch and his co-defendants who were arraigned last week were said to have conspired to commit a felony to rape and sexual exploitation and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun state of Nigeria, 2002.
In his ruling on Monday, Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties who must be civil servants.
He adjourned to July 8, 2020 and transferred the case to Ipetu-Ijesa, the jurisdiction where the offence was allegedly committed.
The Ijesa North Traditional Council had on 17th of May, 2020, suspended Oba Ogungbemi from the council pending the outcome of his trial at the court.
A statement signed by the council’s President, HRM Oba (Engr) Moses Oluwafemi Agunsoye Elegboro of Ijebu-Jesa and Secretaries, Oba Edward Adetimo and Olomu of Ijaregbe Oba Julius Fatanmi, Olura of Ira stated that his suspension takes immediate effect.
According to the statement, “It is agreed that His Royal Highness Oba Olusiji Ogungbemi, The Aketewi of Iketewi in Obokun Local Government Area be suspended with immediate effect from all activities of Ijesa North Traditional Council and Obokun Chieftaincy Committee pending the decision of the court.”
