Edo: INEC Postpones Poll By 3 Weeks as NYSC Pulls Rug from Its Feet

By Ibidapo Balogun

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made a u-turn on the Edo governorship election, postponing the poll by three weeks as the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) pulled the rug from under its feet.

It succumbed to the call for the election shift by the Police and DSS. The election will now hold on September 28.

INEC had said earlier on Thursday that it was going ahead with the governorship poll as scheduled, rejecting the security advice by the Police and Department of State Security Service (DSS) that it should postpone the poll.

But the NYSC threatened to withdraw the corp members to be engaged for the poll following the security report..

NYSC Director-General said the corps could not guarantee the security of the corps members given the security advice from the Police and DSS.

The bulk of INEC adhoc staff normally engaged for election are youth corps members. With the development it is doubtful if INEC can still go ahead with the poll.

DSS and police had on Wednesday advised INEC to postpone the poll, saying there was credible evidence that Boko Haram insurgents were planning to attack about 13 states including Edo around September 12 and 13 during the Eid-el-Kabir festival.

But the commission had rejected with the advice, electing to go ahead with the poll on the grounds that there were fully ready for the election and postponing it at this point would be more expensive for the country.
