The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee On Education, has called on the ministry of education and the State’s Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to urgently rehabilitate the dilapidated public schools buildings under Education District 111.
Education District 111 comprises Falomo Ikoyi, Ikorodu and Epe.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Oluyinka Ogundimu, who was on oversight in company of Hon. Abdusobur Olawale, Hon. David Sentoji, Hon. Abiodun Tobun and Hon. Bisi Yusuf, made the call as he lamented the poor state of the buildings in the visited public schools.
Ogundimu added ” The attention of the Commissioner For Education is needed as a matter of urgency and also the proactive action of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) for professional advice on the school structures”
The Committee during the oversight discovered that a school had population of 619 students and 19 Teachers.
It was discovered that the buildings in Government College (Junior) School, Ketu, Epe, had serious defects as there was no roof in the Principal’s office and the furniture were covered with polythene bags to prevent more damages from rainfall.
All schools visited in the education district had similar challenges such as inadequate teachers, insufficient classrooms and inadequate furniture for both teachers and students.
Some of the schools visited are; Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Government College (Senior) School, Government College (Junior) School both in Ketu-Epe and Epe Girls Senior and Junior High School, Epe.
Recall that the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday, November 8, 2019 in his speech while presenting the 2020 budget estimate before the House of Assembly for approval, said Education would see a significantly increased capital budgetary allocation of N48 billion, an increase of 60% over the 2019 provision of N30 billion.
Sanwo-Olu added ” We must improve the standard and relevance of our education outcomes to our industries. We will work together with our Local governments to strengthen early child education and teachers training/administration, leveraging technology”.
