Ekiti Guber Poll: AIG Zone 8 AssuresResidents of Adequate Security

Ahead of this year’s governorship election
in Ekiti State, the Assistant Inspector-
General of Police Zone 8, AIG Christopher
Dega, has assured the people of the state
that the police command will provide
adequate security for lives and property in
the state before, during and after the
AIG Dega, who gave this assurance while
reviewing the activities of the zone in
2013 at a media briefing with journalists
in Lokoja yesterday, spoke about the
command’s crime prevention and
reduction strategies for 2013.
He said the fortified anti-robbery squad,
improved relationship with other
securities agencies and effective
prosecution of criminals in collaboration
with the Ministry of Justice had aided in
crime reduction in the zone.
He said visibility policing, intensive and
efficient vehicular and foot patrols coupled
with community policing against previous
strategies were responsible for the
decrease in crime rate in the zone in 2013
compared to previous years.
Dega said statistics about some selected
crimes in the zone, which comprises Ekiti,
Kogi and Kwara state, showed that the
crime rate had been reduced by 23%,
29% and 17% in Ekiti, Kogi and Kwara
states respectively in 2013.
AIG explained that the strategies used in
the zone was also responsible for the
crime-free Christmas and New Year
celebration, as there was no robbery case
on the highway or any bank attack, which
was the usual occurrence during such
festive season.
He, however, noted that Kwara State had
continued to have high crime rate in the
zone because the state is sharing border
with another country.
“Kwara State shares border with another
country, and the inter-country boundary
location coupled with its vast geographical
line and high population made it difficult
to curtail crime,”the AIG said
