Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has alleged that there is insider dealing in the Sunday jailbreak at Ado-Ekiti Prisons in the state capital. The prison is located along Afao road in the capital.
He querried how 300 of the 400 inmates in the prison could escape at once and also wondered how inmates were allowed to be using cell phones.
Speaking when he visited the prisons on Monday after he got wind of the jailbreak, the governor said he would contact Abuja (the Federal Government) to probe the prison warders and unravel the circumstances that led to the jailbreak.
He also said the prison must be heavily fortified.
Gunmen numbering about 30 had invaded the prison and bombed the facility and freed the inmates. The gunmen were suspected to be Boko Haram sect members but this has not been independently confirmed.
Dynamites and rocket-propelled launchers were reportedly used to blow up the prisons. The development shook nearby areas and caused pandemonium in Ado-Ekiti.
WESTERN POST learnt that the gunmen had invaded the facility at about 10.30 pm on Sunday night and operated unhindered till about 1. 45am early on Monday.
About 300 inmates were said to have escaped but some of them have been re-arrested.
