A Lagos Lawmaker, Hon. Desmond Elliot, has called on government at all levels to create enabling environment through which youths can succeed in their various endeavors, saying that with such opportunity they would achieve greatness and contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.
Elliot said this at an agrobusiness exibition held in Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, tagged ‘Surulere FarmFair’ .
The FarmFair was organised by Coalition of Youths in collaboration with African Farmer and powered by Elliot.
Elliot represents Surulere Constituency 1 at the Lagos state House of Assembly.
He said he always appreciate the youths for their creativity and innovations, saying that he supports brilliant ideas from them.
The lawmaker, who inspected all the exibition stands, said it was the youths that decided to organise the farm fair and that he bought into the idea since it was a brilliant one.
He added that he has more programmes with the youths which were upshoot of the aftermath of EndSARS, saying ” This farm fair is to show that once you give the youths the right platform they can achieve many things. They only need the enabling environment which is what I have done. The fact is they show commitment even as I did not give them money for feeding”.
He said as Christmas is nearer, residents of Lagos can visit the farmfair to purchase foodstuffs at cheaper rates, saying that the purpose was to get the farm produce closer to the final consumer.
Elliot, who gave scholarship to one of the exibitors, said he had never met the beneficiary before but that he was moved by her situation and her love for entrepreneurship.
He added ” Anytime I see opportunity to do good, I do because nobody can tell when the good will speak for you. It is not about politics, there is politics when it is a game and this is not a game, this is reality of life”.
He urged the Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies to fashion out ways people could start to have systemic farming in their various homes, saying that the Lagos state government is improving in the growing of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMSEs).
” The Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) has alot of work to do in this regard and I am hoping on the government of Lagos which is really sincere towards improving and growing SMEs in agriculture. If we can’t do more in area of large scale agriculture, we can make everyone who has a yard to grow farm systemically”, said Elliot.
The exibition stands were more than (20) twenty with farm produce and processed foodstuffs sold at cheaper rates. Some of the stands also had food therapy solutions, natural foods, sea foods, spices and seasoning, and other food items.
The farmfair was basically for small and medium agrobusiness owners to showcase their products and sell to interested buyers at cheaper rates compare to the main market.
In another development, the Igbo speaking community in the state, bestowed Elliot an award for his achievements and contributions to humanity.
While presenting the award, the President General of Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos, Chief (Sir) Sunday Udeh, said ” We believe today that Hon. Desmond Elliot deserves to be honoured for the relationship he has with the Igbos and for the selfless work he has done for the of Lagos”.
” We are giving you this award because of your contributions to the growth of Igbo speaking community in Lagos and humanity at large.
