Embrace Healthy, Hygienic Lifestyle, Ambode’S Wife Charges Pregnant Women


Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode on Wednesday urged pregnant women to complement the efforts of government at achieving zero infant maternal mortality rate by embracing healthy and hygienic lifestyle, just as she urged them to get proper advice and direction on basic ante and post natal care for themselves and their infants.

Mrs. Ambode, who spoke at a programme of support for pregnant women organized by Hope for Women In Nigeria Initiative ,HOFOWEM, which is her pet project, said often times infants are at risk of infections, diarrhea, poor growth and many common diseases associated with un-hygienic habits, and as such expectant mothers must make hygienic living a habit such as simple washing of hands constantly.
The event which was held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, as a total of about 230 pregnant women were given complete delivery packs which included baby and mother beds, sanitary pad, towel, beverages, thermometer, shawl, diapers, breastfeeding net, traveling bed, sanitizers, among others.

According to Mrs Ambode ‘In the last few years maternal and child mortality rate have reduced significantly in Lagos State,noting that it is due to the state government continuous improvement of health facilities, constant retraining of medical personel and provision of modern equipment among others’
She urged expectant mothers to make use of mosquito nets given to them by the government, advicing them to adhere to advice and direction on basic ante and post natal care given to them by medical officers .Mrs Ambode said ‘Mothers, always wash your own hands,not only when you have visited the toilet but before cooking, serving food or attending to your infants.This way, many unnecessary illnesses for the child or mother would be prevented.’
Coordinator of HOFOWEM who also spoke at ceremony Ms Oyefunke Adeleke thanked the governor’s wife for giving hope to women in Lagos State, especially the needy through its welfare programmes.She noted during her opening remarks that expectant mothers need further enlightenment on basic personal hygine, ante-natal and post natal classes;knowing their genotype and other pregnacy-related issues, which often times are take for granted at the risk of death of the mother, the baby or both. Adeleke said HOFOWEM realized through findings that many expectant mothers are always unprepared for the arrival of their much expected guest, and women expecting babies for the first are not only guilty of this ,even some that are carrying their fourth or fifth pregnancy are also guilty.
Representative of National Population Commission,Mrs Olusola Osideko told the pregnant women to register their child immediately they are born while commissioner for Lagos State ,Dr Jide Idris at the programme told pregnant women their behaviour towards their pregnancy is very key.
