Personalities from all walks of life converged at the Conference Room of the National Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan to grace the book presentation of an Emeritus Professor of Political Science, John Ayoade who turns 72 on Wednesday, 12th November.
While reviewing the 28-chapters, 584-page book, the South-West Regional Editor of The Sun Newspapers, Mr. Yinka Fabowale described the book as an historical book which created a platform for the analytical roles and functions of the legislature in the country.
Speaking on the rationale behind the book, one of the editors of the book, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science, University of Ilorin who is currently the Special Adviser on Political Matters to Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Dr. Olugbade Ojo said the book was basically written to take into cognisance roles of the legislature in governance and politics.
“We have over-studied other organs including the forth estate of the realm which is the media, we have studied the executive and the judiciary, but we have under-studied the legislature, when the military takes over, the parliament is dissolved, that is why the legislature is having little experience for them to make laws unlike the executive and the judiciary”
He added that the expectation from the legislature outside their major function of lawmaking was another reason for the book, which he said was to critically study the second arm of the government.
Dr. Ojo further hinted that the editors and contributors to the historic book realized the gap between the functions and expectations of the people from the legislature which formed part of what the book intends to bridge.
Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi who spoke through the State’s Commissioner for Education, Professor Solomon Olaniyonu described the book as the one of the books that analysed the roles and function of the legislature in the country.
In his remark, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Alhaji Oguntola Toogun, described the book as an eye opener for the people about the function of the parliamentarians.
