Residents of border communities in Ogun State have stormed the customs office in Idiroko border to demand an end to the killing of innocent citizens allegedly by men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Youths of Ipokia Local Government availed themselves of the opportunities provided by the #EndSARS protest to make known their demands.

Since Monday, the protesters have shut down the ever-busy Idiroko international road as they marched to the NCS office.

Hitherto, residents of the border areas in Yewa area of Ogun State have been complaining of innocent souls being killed by men of the NCS.

Most of the killings, they alleged, do occur “whenever the customs officers are chasing after suspected smugglers, shooting sporadically.”

They said there have been promises by the leadership of the NCS; saying, however, that the killings have continued unabated.

It was recalls that a panel beater was reportedly shot dead by officers of the NCS in Oja Odan in September 2020.

Likewise, a 15-year-old student, Sekinat Agbelade, who was preparing for her WASSCE, was said to have been killed by a stray bullet fired by a customs officer in Agosasa in March 2020.

In May 2020, the NCS was also accused of being responsible for the death of a 15-year-old Riliwan Bello, in Owode, Yewa South Local Government of Ogun.

He also saud that some students of Ojumo Community High School in Ihunbo were hit by a car driven by a customs officer chasing a smuggler in October 2019.

The residents of the area said they were not happy that government at all levels were not doing enough to stop the killing of innocent souls in Ogun West, adding that the time has come to demand justice.

As of Tuesday morning, the protesters have mounted roadblocks in Idiroko as they continue with their peaceful protest.

It was gathered that a monarch, who tried to pass through Idiroko was sent back by the protesting youths.
