Equities Market Closes January Positive, Gains N266bn

    Investors’ investment on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) appreciated by N266 billion as the market opened the week on a positive note.
    The All Share Index (ASI) rose by 419.62 points, representing an increase of 0.91 per cent to close at  46,624.67 points. While the overall market capitalisation value gained N226 billion to close at N25.124 trillion.
    The upturn was impacted by gains recorded in medium and large capitalised stocks, amongst which are; Presco, MTN Nigeria Communications (MTNN), Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) and BUA Cement.
    Market sentiment, as measured by market breadth, was positive as 33 stocks declined, relative to 23 gainers. Consolidated Hallmark Insurance, NCR Nigeria and R.T. Briscoe Nigeria recorded the highest price gain of 10 per cent each to close at 66 kobo, N3.30 and 22 kobo respectively, per share. Presco followed with a gain 9.97 per cent to close at N96.55, while NGX Group up by 9.93 per cent to close at N23.25, per share.
    On the other hand, University Press led the losers’ chart by 9.43 per cent to close at N2.40, per share. Lasaco Asssurance followed with a decline of 8.85 per cent, to close at N1.03, while Linkage Assurance depreciated by 7.84 per cent  to close at 47 kobo, per share.
    Mutual Benefits Assurance declined by 7.14 per cent to close at 26 kobo, while Prestige Assurance depreciated by 6.52 per cent to close at 43 kobo, per share.
    Also, the total volume of trades increased by 39.03 per cent to 435.799 million units, valued at N3.441 billion, and exchanged in 6,482 deals.  Transactions in the shares of Fidelity Bank topped the activity chart with 38.035 million shares valued at N106.219 million.
    R.T. Briscoe Nigeria followed with 30.039 million shares worth N6.076 million, while Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp) traded 27.449 million shares valued at N31.443 million.
    FBN Holdings (FBNH) traded 26.791 million shares valued at N310.515 million, while Linkage Assurance transacted 23.029 million shares worth N11.012 million.
