Members of the Edo State House of Assembly were Monday thrown into mourning following the news of the dead of the lawmaker representing Etsako East Constituency, Honourable Peter Aliu.

When WESTERN POST visited the legislative quarters on Ihama Road GRA, his residence was a Mecca of sorts as visitors continued to throng his home.

Several of them wore long faces while discussing in hush tones amidst tears

The All Progressive Congress (APC) lawmaker died in the early hours of Monday at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital after years of battling with yet undisclosed ailment.

The lawmaker became more popular when he acted as speaker tempore under the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) when the speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Zakawanu Garuba and his deputy, Levis Aigbogun (both of the Peoples Democratic Party) were impeached from office by 16 members during a raucous and violent crisis which rocked the house.

Born in Igbiode-Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area of the state, the deceased attended St. Peter’s Grammer School Agbenebode and the Federal Polytechnic Auchi where he studied accountancy.

He went to England in 1976 as a federal scholar to prepare for his accountancy professional examination and later attended the Ambrose Alli University where he read law. He was called to the Bar in 2000.

Aliu, who was serving as a second term lawmaker, was said to have recently picked up an expression of interest form for next year’s general election.

He was the chairman House Committee on Public Account, Appropriation and Project Monitoring.

Meanwhile Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole leader of the PDP-led Assembly, Hon Festus Ebea, Majority leader; Hon Phillip Shaibu described the news of the death of the lawmaker as shocking.

Ebea, who led PDP lawmakers described the late lawmaker as a “very resourceful person as far as law making and law in general was concern adding that he “was somebody when it comes to figure, especially appropriation you have him handy.

“It very unfortunate because this a wrong time for all of us as members of the state assembly whether APC or PDP, we will surely miss him because we know what he stands for. We prayed that God to grant his soul peaceful rest and we beg God continue to protect the family and we pray God will touch all our hearts so that we can continue to act in the interest of Edo people.”

Also Majority Leader of the House, Philip Shaibu, who cancelled his sensitization trip to his constituency, said the late lawmaker fatherly advice would be missed by all.
