Ex-Falcons Coach Akande: My Sack Too Cruel
*He was not sacked but retired, says Oyo Sports Commissioner
Former Head coach of Super Falcons of Nigeria Niyi Akande has described as cruel his purported sack as the Club Manager of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) returnee Crown FC of Ogbomoso.
Speaking on the development, the ex-Gateway of Abeokuta gaffer who was dropped last week and replaced by ex-Gateway FC team manager Tony Rafua rued the decision of the owners of the Ogbomoso-based club to kick him out, arguing that it was unfair for him to be treated in such a manner after his contribution to the Ajilete Warriors.
‘’It is quite unfortunate. How on earth can people be so inhuman, I know the role I played in ensuring that Crown FC returned to the elite league and after achieving that, the next thing was for me to be booted out and be replaced by somebody from a different part of the country, do they want me dead,’’ the former Shooting Stars coach asked rhetorically.
However, in a swift reaction to Akande’s claim that he was sacked, Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Umar Farouk Alao denied sacking the coach, saying he was only retired due to old age.
Speaking through one of his close associates, the commissioner explained that the decision to replace Akande was not borne out of hatred for him but just to allow him to take a rest after years of meritorious service to the development of football both in Crown FC and the state in general.
‘’Baba Akande was not sacked but only retired. We felt that at over age 70, it was high time he took a rest. In England, as successful as Sir Alex Ferguson was, he quit due to his age, so there is nothing wrong in retiring Baba Akande and replacing him with a young person,’’ the commissioner’s associate said.
