Ex-Magistrate, 19 Others Arraigned for Rioting in Ekiti

A former magistrate, Ilesanmi Ojo, and 19 others were on Tuesday arraigned in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for rioting. But the Chief Magistrate, Adesoji Adegboye, discharged Ojo on self-recognition.
Adegboye also granted bail to all the accused persons in the sum of N100,000 each with two each sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the matter till September 30 for further hearing.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant Caleb Leranmo, told the court that the accused persons committed the offence on September 3 at Awo-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
Leranmo said the accused persons unlawfully took part in a riot and in a manner likely to cause breech of the peace in Awo community.
He added that the accused also assaulted DSP Dauda Dankwonbo during his lawful duty.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 356, 249 of the Criminal Code, Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty.
Their Counsel, Rotimi Adabenbe, prayed the court to grant bail to the accused persons in liberal terms, promising that they would not jump bail.
Adabenbe said most of the accused persons were important people in the society, including chiefs of the community.
